Orang Minyak, a supernatural entity from Malaysian folklore, has long being associated with incidents involving rape.
TRANSFORMATION
There are many adaptations as to how Orang Minyak transitions from man to demon. Traditionally, they were individuals who practiced dark magic, men whose lust and desperation led them to tap into such magic in order to pursue the women they desired.
In some stories, sexually deprived men are tempted with power, often by a demonic force, in exchange for the raping of 21 virgins over 7 days. Once they become the Orang Minyak and harness the promised power, they are bound to this hideous act for eternity, as part of their contract. Over the weeks, months and years, Orang Minyak will seek out three virgin women to violate each day. The more he does this, the more it morphs into a compulsion, an addiction that cannot be destroyed even if the Orang Minyak wishes to break free.
APPEARANCE AND ATTRIBUTES
Orang Minyak physically resembles an ordinary man, albeit on the taller side, often with striking yellow or jet black eyes. But the truly unsettling thing about him is the fact that he is coated head to toe with a black, oily substance, hence why some refer to him as the ‘Oily Man’. This slick covering, caked into his skin, not only camouflages him in the darkness but aids him in evading capture.
Because his sole objective is rape, Orang Minyak is a monster with insatiable lust, a libido far surpassing that of a human and no sense of self restraint. Any virgin who crosses his path runs an extremely high risk of being raped, and he will relentlessly seek out such women.
Orang Minyak remains invisible to all but his intended victims, rendering them defenceless against his advances. During an assault, the Orang Minyak possesses abilities similar to that of a Succubus, compelling his victims into submission. Those who resist are plunged into a state of paralysis or rendered mute at his command, so that their cries for help go unheard by others.
PROTECTION AGAINST ORANG MINYAK
Young virgins may leave male clothes scattered all over their bed, or even sleep in them, creating the illusion of another male’s presence. Additionally, they may wear sweaty clothes to indicate recent intimacy.
During an assault, biting the left thumb and wrapping it in a bewitched cloth is said to stop Orang Minyak.
ORANG MINYAK AND THE IMPACT ON SOCIETY
Orang Minyak may be a creature of folklore but the stories surrounding him have inspired many criminals and rapists to emulate his actions.
In Malaysia, Orang Minyak has become a popular subject in tv and film.
There have been reported sightings of Orang Minyak, with witnesses describing a tall figure covered with oil, climbing walls and buildings with uncanny ease.
